Felix stood next to Morsey at the heavy gate.

“Remember when we used to come out here and smoke one?” Morsey asked.

The two old men laughed.

“Christ, we did a lot out here at this gate,” Felix said. “Drinking, smoking, playing guitars.”

“Meeting women,” Morsey said.

“That was always the best part,” Felix said.

“Been a long time, huh?”

“Speak for yourself.”

“Get the hell out of here, Felix. Who are you fucking?”

“That’s my business.”

“The old rod still gets strong enough?” Morsey asked. “No pills?”

“No fucking pills. What pills? I don’t need a fucking pill for anything. If my dick ain’t getting hard, then the good lord might as well stop my heart.”

Morsey laughed. “What do you think of these young guys in the bunkhouse now?”

“What do they say? Changing tides or some shit?”

“I don’t know what that means.”

“Means we’re old and they’re young. But here at this ranch, that don’t mean a thing. Old or young can be gone in a second.”

“That doesn’t scare you?”

Felix shook his head. “I made my peace with life and death a long time ago. If I wake up, I take a breath, take a piss, I’m ready to go.”

“Don’t forget the morning whiskey,” Morsey said.

“That’s the secret to living long.”

Both men laughed again.

A set of headlights suddenly turned on.

A black car crept up toward the gate.

“What the hell is this?” Felix whispered.

Morsey reached for a rifle and lifted it up.

The expensive looking car came to a stop. The back window rolled down.

Felix knew the pretty face staring at him.

“Wade Ain,” Felix said. “You make a wrong turn?”

“No,” Wade said. “Just going for a late-night drive.”

“You do that often around here?” Morsey asked. He nodded to the rifle.

Wade smiled. “Actually, I’m lying to you gentlemen. I’m out on this drive tonight looking for something I lost.”

“I can assure you nothing here is yours,” Felix said.

“I disagree,” Wade said. “No worries though. I’ll get it back.”

With that said, Wade gave a nod and rolled the window up.

The black car then drove off.

“What in the hell was that about?” Morsey asked.

“Not sure,” Felix said.

“Maybe we should call it a night.”

“Yeah, we should. You go back. I’ll be there in a few. Going to watch him leave, then think a little.”

“You sure?”

Felix nodded. “I like to think alone, Morsey.”

That was something Morsey knew well about Felix.

He made sure to have Felix prove he was protected to be left alone.

Morsey left and Felix stood at the gate by himself.

He thought about the ranch. He thought about the Lynot family. He thought about Cord Lynot and the baby that had shown up.

It was a tough life to live.

But one worth living.

Felix grabbed the gate and gave it a quick pull. A reminder that everything was closed up tight.

Felix turned and was face to face with someone dressed in all black.

Before Felix could reach for his gun, he felt a sharp pain at the left side of his head.

A second later, he was on the ground.
